If More People are Conservative Why is the GOP a Wreck?

Polls keep indicating that a lot of Americans consider themselves conservative, and that more people are becoming more conservative than they are liberal.  So, if that's the case, then why is the GOP is such a shambles politically speaking?  They do not seem to have much of an any traction outside the white male demographic.
